Direct-Injection & Twin-Turbos Coming To Mercedes-Benz Next Year
The push by governments around the world for stricter emissions regulations for new cars has all automakers, from mainstream makes like Toyota and GM all the way up to exclusive brands like Mercedes-Benz and even Ferrari working on new methods to clean up their act.
One trend we’ve already started to see is the downsizing of engines. Both Ford and GM, for example, are starting to place less emphasis on their big V-8 engines in favor of more economical V-6 units, and this trend is being repeated at BMW and Mercedes-Benz.
Mercedes-Benz is developing new technologies to boost the output of its compact four-cylinder engine range--the Diesotto being one of the most exciting prospects. However, before then we’ll start to see simpler technologies like turbocharging and direct-injection filter across the entire Mercedes-Benz lineup.
Speaking with Edmunds, Mercedes-Benz R&D exec Dr. Thomas Weber revealed that a new family of engines will emerge from Mercedes-Benz starting late next year that will rely heavily on turbocharging and direct injection to deliver gains in power, efficiency and CO2 reduction.
Labeled “MoVe” for modular V-6 and V-8s, the engines will first appear in new versions of the CLS, facelifted R-Class and S-Class Coupe (renamed CL Coupe).
Weber revealed that all V-8 engines will be turbocharged by the 2011 model year. This includes the current 6.2-liter AMG unit, which will be replaced by a 5.5-liter twin-turbo version with direct injection. Non-AMG models will get smaller V-8 engines as well as turbocharged V-6 units. Importantly, most will be designed to integrate with hybrid drive systems.

Hybrid Preview-2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450
Hybrid Preview-2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450

The luxury labels have well and truly caught the hybrid bug, with Mercedes-Benz announcing this week its second eco-friendlier vehicle, the all-new ML450 Hybrid. First seen at the New York Auto Show back in April, the 2010 Mercedes-Benz ML450 Hybrid officially goes on sale on November 16.
Featuring V8-like power with four-cylinder fuel economy, the ML450 Hybrid packs two electric motors and a 3.5-liter V-6 gasoline engine that work together to provide impressive performance and fuel economy.
According to Mercedes-Benz, the big SUV returns a fuel economy of 21 mpg around town and 24 mpg on the highway. For comparison, the similarly sized but V-8 powered 2010 BMW X6 ActiveHybrid returns an EPA-rated 17 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway.
The combined peak output of its two electric motors and V-6 engine stands at 340 horsepower and 381 pound-feet of torque. Fuel efficiency gains are made through a combination of technologies, including stop-start functionality, which helps to cut fuel use while standing still at traffic lights or jams.
Similar to GM’s Two-Mode hybrid system, the two electric motors in the ML450 Hybrid are integrated within a modified automatic transmission. One motor is dedicated to pulling away under electric power and the second is set up specifically for boosting acceleration.
In this combination, the ML450 Hybrid can drive solely on electric power up to a maximum speed of 34 mph. On hard acceleration, the gasoline engine is started automatically.
During braking and coasting, the electric motors act as generators, slowing the SUV and recovering kinetic energy. Under heavy braking, the vehicle's conventional brakes also come into play. Recovered energy is stored in a liquid-cooled, 288-volt nickel-metal-hydride battery that's enclosed under the rear cargo floor so as to not intrude into the storage area.
Joining the S400 Hybrid and BlueTEC diesel models in the Mercedes-Benz lineup, the ML450 Hybrid is being offered as part of a special lease only option (no purchase) for a monthly lease price of $659 per month for 36 months and $549 per month for 60 months.

Brabus G V12 S Biturbo Is One Insane Mercedes-Benz G-Class
Brabus G V12 S Biturbo Is One Insane Mercedes-Benz G-Class

Leave it to Brabus to produce one of the most outrageous off-road machines ever seen: the G V12 S Biturbo.
Built off the legendary Mercedes-Benz G-class, the G V12 S Biturbo is powered by a modified version of the twin-turbo V-12 found in the S600. Brabus took the liberty of boring the engine from 5.5 liters to 6.3 liters. The stock turbochargers have been replaced by bigger units aided by an intercooler system.
All these upgrades yield an astounding 700 hp at 5100 RPM and 973 lb-ft of torque at 2100 RPM. Fearing for the transmission, Brabus electronically limited peak torque to a mere 811 lb-ft. More impressively, the engine still meets strict Euro 4 emissions regulations. To help keep the power in check, a high performance braking system comes standard.
To distinguish the new Brabus G from a standard G-Class, the car has a unique look. The body modifications include fender flares, allowing customers to select from a wide variety of ten-inch wide 20- or 22-inch wheels. A custom suspension has been fitted to allow the buyer to opt for a comfy highway ride or serious off-road capabilities.
The interior of the Brabus G V12 S is completely customized as well. Standard appointments include a sport steering wheel, 175-mph speedometer, illuminated Brabus stainless-steel scuff plates, and a handcrafted full-leather interior from sumptuous Mastik leather. Upon customer request, Brabus can fully customize the car to be an off-road machine or a mobile office, complete with a TV tuner and high-tech communication technologies.
Unfortunately, no word has been given about this beast’s Atlantic crossing. In Europe it will start at a staggering €379,000 ($477,000).
